Defendant: John Bobbitt (DOB 09/23/1977)

Sept. 2, 2020 -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced John Bobbitt of Mount Vernon was arraigned in the shooting death of another man in April. After the shooting, he fled the county, was later arrested in New Jersey, and appeared today via video conference in Westchester County Court before Judge David Zuckerman.

He is charged with:

  • Murder in the Second Degree, a class A felony
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony
  • Menacing in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor

Bobbitt was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court next on Sept. 6, 2020.

Background
On April 28, 2020, at about 10:15 p.m. on Millington Street in Mount Vernon, John Bobbitt shot 28-year-old Kashawn Smith of Mount Vernon multiple times, killing him. Bobbitt and Smith were known to each other.

Bobbitt was located in Newark, New Jersey by members of the Mount Vernon Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, and the Newark Police Department. He was arrested there July 13, 2020, and remanded into custody. He waived extradition and was returned to New York.

Assistant District Attorney Lana Hochheiser, Deputy Homicide Bureau Chief, and Assistant District Attorney Daniel Flecha, both of the Superior Court Trial Division, are prosecuting the case.
