Feb. 23, 2018 -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. today announced that a former Yonkers police officer has been indicted on grand larceny and tax evasion charges.

Mario Sasso (DOB 05/24/1957), of Haverstraw, NY, was arraigned today before Judge Larry Schwartz and charged with two counts of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, one count of Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, and one count of Criminal Tax Fraud in the Third Degree on charges related to his theft of over $300,000 from two Greenburgh doctors.

According to Scarpino, the crimes allegedly occurred between December 2012 and May 2014, when Sasso stole approximately $196,535 from one victim and approximately $126,513 from the other by fraudulently claiming the funds would be used for financial investments in real estate properties located in Yonkers and the Bronx. Instead the defendant diverted the money for his personal use.

Sasso is also accused of failing to remit over $10,000 in taxes on the money he stole for the taxable year 2013.

Sasso’s attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. He is currently out on bail. His next court date is March 20, 2018. If convicted, Sasso faces up to 15 years in state prison.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office worked in cooperation with the Greenburgh Police Department on the investigation, as well as the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Assistant District Attorney Berit Huseby of the Investigations Division’s Economic Crimes Bureau is prosecuting the case.
