Defendant: John Wooten (DOB 08/28/81)
Oct. 11, 2018 -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced John Wooten, an inmate at the Westchester County jail, pleaded guilty Thursday to assaulting two Westchester County Correction Officers, one in December, 2017 and one in January, 2018.
Specifically, Wooten pleaded guilty to two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, class D felonies.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 14, 2018. Upon sentencing, he faces up to seven years in state prison for each charge.
At the time, Wooten was being held at the Westchester County Jail on a charge of Criminal Mischief, a class E felony, for an incident committed at 25 Operations Drive, Mount Pleasant, Dec. 19, 2017.
Following this guilty plea, DA Scarpino said: “Corrections Officers do a dangerous and important job. They should know that any attack on any one of them within the County Jail will be prosecuted and we will see that justice is done.”
Westchester Department of Correction Commissioner Joseph K. Spano stated: “Today’s plea sends a strong message -- assaulting any member of our correctional staff is unacceptable and will be dealt with swiftly. It will also carry serious consequences, including a lengthy prison sentence. Further, the handling of these two assaults on correction officers demonstrates the continued collaboration between all sectors of Westchester’s law enforcement community.”
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nadine Nagler, Chief of the Narcotics and Firearms Bureau.
