In honor of the 2008 National Safe Schools Week, the Westchester County District Attorney’s office presented anti-gun violence workshops to middle and high schools students throughout lower Westchester County. District Attorney Janet DiFiore, in partnership with Yonkers Public School Superintendent Bernard P. Pierorazio (pictured) and Mount Vernon City School District Superintendent Dr. W.L. "Tony" Sawyer, addressed their concerns for the well being of young people and the threat posed by gun violence. The DA discussed the importance of protecting children against violent crime, the legal and medical ramifications of possessing illegal handguns and the role that young

people can play in reducing gun violence.

District Attorney Janet DiFiore and members of the District Attorneys office with participants in the 2008 New York Legal Education Opportunity program. The NYLEO program assists minority, low-income and educationally disadvantaged college graduates in acquiring the fundamental and practical skills necessary to succeed in law school. As part of the program, students have the opportunity to visit courts in session and meet with members of the judiciary and other legal professionals.

Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore as she received the 2008 Charles A. Rapallo Award from the Columbian Lawyers Association of the First Judicial Department. This is the forty third time the award was conferred and the first to a female District Attorney. The award was presented to the District Attorney by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, at a ceremony, in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore speaking at a news conference in support of proposed legislation by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (far right) that would further strengthen protections against the use of the Internet by convicted sex offenders. The Electronic Security and Targeting of Online Predators Act (e-STOP), is the nation's most comprehensive legislation to deal with the threat of sexual predators on the Internet. It also creates the country's first mandatory ban on sexual predators from social networking Web sites.

District Attorney Janet DiFiore along with County Executive Andy Spano at the announcement of a new county wide gun rewards program. Anyone who has information about an individual possessing an illegal handgun can call a secure telephone number and if their tip leads to an arrest and conviction, they can receive $1,000.
