Defendant: George Smith  (DOB 09/24/89)

July 10, 2019 -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced George Smith of Mount Vernon was sentenced on charges stemming from a high-speed chase with police and ramming a Westchester County Police cruiser and assaulting an officer. Westchester County Court Judge David Zuckerman presided.

Specifically, Smith was sentenced to the following:

• Two counts of Assault in the Second Degree -- 3-6 years in state prison (on each count)
• Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle in the Second Degree -- 2-4 years in state prison
• Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree -- 2-4 years in state prison

All terms will run concurrently.

Background
Around 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 18, 2018, Westchester County Police alerted Mount Vernon Police that a stolen car was being driven in the city. MVPD tried to stop the vehicle, which drove away, entering the Hutchinson River Parkway southbound.

The driver, George Smith, was operating the vehicle as a livery cab. He had just picked up a fare in the Bronx and was driving to Mount Vernon.

As police pursued, Smith’s vehicle rammed into a Westchester County Police patrol car, injuring an officer. Smith continued driving. The passenger was also injured. Smith abandoned the car on Boston Post Road in the Bronx and fled on foot. He was arrested later in the Bronx and taken into custody.

He pleaded guilty May 29, 2019.

Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Strongin, Deputy Chief of the Career Criminal Bureau, prosecuted the case.
