Jan. 2, 2019 -- “In Westchester, we know the pain caused by firearms no matter how they are constructed or obtained. When Yonkers Police Officer Kayla Maher was shot by Frank Valencia in 2017, the bullets came from a so-called “ghost gun.” These “DIY guns” or “build-your-own weapons” are no less dangerous that any gun bought in a store or on the street. We support the Governor’s call to require all weapons’ parts to have a serial number and to be sold only to authorized buyers. This is one more common-sense gun safety action. The proposed bill would also ban individuals from obtaining major components of a firearm, rifle or shotgun online. We urge the Legislature to take up this bill which will create new misdemeanor and felony penalties for violating these provisions and give us new tools to help keep Westchester safe.”
