Defendant: Theresa Casey (03/25/59)

Jan. 3, 2019 -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. announced that Theresa Casey of Yonkers was sentenced Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2019) to state prison for stealing from her former employer.

Casey pleaded guilty June 6, 2018, to Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a class C felony, in relation to the theft of almost $250,000 from Allan M. Block Agency, the Tarrytown company where she was employed.

Specifically, on Wednesday, Westchester County Court Judge George Fufidio sentenced her to 2-6 years in state prison. Judge Fufidio also issued two judgments and orders of restitution, one in the amount of $96,535.70 for the Allan M. Block Agency and the other in the amount of $150,216.41 for The Hartford, which had previously reimbursed the victim (Block) for part of its loss.

Background
Casey worked in the payroll department as a bookkeeper for the Allan M. Block Agency, which provides life insurance, homeowner’s insurance, and insurance for businesses. The defendant was in charge of payroll for the company. As part of her responsibilities, she managed payments to insurance agents, who were paid on commission. In reviewing commission payment records, company owners discovered irregularities. They determined the defendant had been improperly paying herself as a commissioned employee in addition to her regular salary from May 2014 to February 2017. The owners then reported the theft to the Tarrytown Police. Casey stole a total of $246,752.11 from her employer.

Tarrytown Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant District Attorney Gwen Galef, Chief of the Economic Crimes Bureau of the Westchester County District Attorney’s Investigations Division, prosecuted the case.
