The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office offers full and part time internship positions throughout the year for law students and undergraduates. Each program provides students with an opportunity to learn first-hand what it is like to work in a prosecutor’s office.

Law School Internships
The internship program is designed to provide students with valuable experience in all aspects of prosecutorial work. Interns are assigned to a Division/Bureau where they help prepare cases for hearings and trials, conduct research, write briefs and assist with investigations. In some cases, interns are given the opportunity to make court appearances pursuant to the student practice order. During the summer, the Office conducts various programs to enhance the internship experience such as a weekly Lunchtime Speaker Series, community outreach opportunities and a mock trial.

Applicants who express a particular interest in work relating to wrongful convictions may apply for an internship with the Office’s newly formed Conviction Review Unit. The CRU examines credible, investigable claims of actual innocence and wrongful conviction, and makes reports and recommendations to the District Attorney. CRU interns may be assigned to any of these tasks: (1) processing and evaluating requests for review of criminal convictions; (2) reviewing trial/plea transcripts and case files and producing memoranda and/or outlines on these reviews; (3) legal research; (4) tracking down documents and other information as part of CRU investigations and (5) answering correspondence, scanning and bookmarking. For more information about the CRU, or to apply for a CRU internship, visit the Conviction Review Unit page.

In addition to casework, interns will also have the opportunity to learn about, and participate in, the Office’s criminal justice reform initiatives and diversion programs, such as the recently launched Project Fresh Start. These initiatives are part of DA Rocah’s efforts to take a “Community First” approach to prosecution to reduce racial disparities and inequities in our criminal justice system. These programs will, among other things, divert from prosecution people who are arrested for low-level crimes and choose to participate in social services counseling.

Summer internship positions are full-time (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and fall/spring internships are part-time (10-15 hours/week).
