Background
On June 3, 2016, at approximately midnight, the first victim, a female aged 42 from Mount Kisco, was at home asleep in bed when an unknown male intruder (who turned out to be the defendant) unlawfully entered  her home, climbed on top of her, and sexually attacked her. During the struggle with her attacker, she took a gray baseball hat off his head at which point he fled.

On Aug. 21, 2016, at approximately 8 a.m., the second victim, a female aged 19, arrived at the Purdys Metro North train station after commuting from New York City. As she walked through the stairwell and platform heading to the parking lot, she was approached by a stranger, Sandoval-Campos, who attempted to engage her in conversation. The victim continued to walk toward a footpath leading to Route 116 and ignored the defendant. Upon entering the footpath, Sandoval-Campos grabbed the victim, restrained her on the ground, proceeded to grope her body attempting to remove her clothing, and exposed himself. A good Samaritan in the parking lot responded to the victim’s screams and prevented her rape. Sandoval-Campos ran from the scene dropping an orange baseball cap he was wearing during this attack.

DNA results conducted from each cap recovered from the crime scenes were entered into CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) and the cases were linked to each other conclusively establishing Sandoval-Campos identification as the perpetrator of both events. Sandoval-Campos was arrested on Sept. 9, 2016.

Victim’s Impact Statement
In court today, one victim told of the horrendous impact this crime has had on her life, calling her attacker “the monster that changed my life forever.”  In an emotional statement she said, “As an educator of students with severe developmental and psychiatric disabilities, I am trained to handle and de-escalate crisis situations. But I was never prepared for something like this. I wish I could erase the memories of being sexually assaulted, violated in the one place you should feel safe.” She added, “The aftermath of that terrifying experience caused me great emotional turmoil. I no longer felt safe in my own home. I became so hyper vigilant of everyone around me and no longer trusted anyone. Not only did you impact my life negatively, your actions also affected my family, my career, my students and my friends. They all had to watch me suffer.” She addressed her attacker directly, saying, “Ronal, you are a danger to society and do not deserve the privilege of walking amongst us freely. You are sick, and I don’t believe that you have any remorse for your actions. Therefore, you belong in prison.”

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Michelle Lopez, Bureau Chief of the Sex Crimes Bureau.
