Sept. 23, 2013 -- Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Amar Bell (DOB 02/22/77) of 256 Woolworth Avenue, Yonkers, New York, was convicted today after a jury trial of:

  • one count of Assault in the First Degree, a class “B” Violent Felony,
  • one count Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a class “D” Felony.

On April 12, 2011, at approximately 11 a.m., in the “Games and Wireless” store located at 18 Main Street in Yonkers, the defendant, a customer of the store, became irate during an interaction with an employee of the store, pulled out a knife and intentionally slashed the victim across the face. The slashing caused a large wound from the corner of the mouth across his cheek and profuse bleeding.

Immediately after slashing the victim, the defendant fled on foot from the store.

The defendant was known to the victim as a customer of the store, who purchased a cellular telephone from that same store the day before.

The police were called and members of the Yonkers Police Department responded immediately.

As a result, of the slashing, the victim required emergency medical treatment and was transported to the Westchester Medical Center.  At the hospital, the victim received two layers of multiple stitches across his face to close the wound.  The victim remains permanently scarred across his left cheek as a result of the defendant’s actions.

Video surveillance from the store recorded and captured the incident.

On April 26, 2011, at approximately 11:30 a.m., the police located the defendant at 3 Cottage Place in New Rochelle and arrested him.

“In an instant, a disagreement over an electronic device led to the permanent disfigurement of a 27 year old man. This defendant has had both legal and mental health issues for most of his adult life and because of his violent actions in this case, he will be spending much of his future in prison,” said District Attorney Janet DiFiore.

Sentencing will be on Dec. 17, 2013.

The defendant will be sentenced as a persistent violent felony offender and faces a maximum of twenty five years to life in prison.

Assistant District Attorney Christine O’Connor of the Superior Court Trial Division prosecuted the case.
