FORMER YONKERS CHIEF ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER PLEADS GUILTY TO GRAND LARCENY
Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Albert T. Walker (DOB 06/30/70) of 117 Stanley Avenue, Yonkers, New York pled guilty today to one count of Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a class “D” Felony. Walker, who was the City’s Chief Animal Control Officer, ran the Yonkers Animal Shelter from August 2001 until his resignation at the end of February 2007. After his resignation, Walker was confronted with discrepancies in the Shelter’s daily cash receipts by the Commissioner of the Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation, who oversees the operation of the Yonkers Animal Shelter. An audit of the cash receipts showed that over a period of fourteen months from December 2005 to February 2007, Walker stole $5,372.50 from the Animal Shelter. The theft by Walker concerned receipts from the public for various services provided by the Animal Shelter including adoptions, spading, neutering, euthanasia procedures as well as licensing fees. The case was referred to the District Attorney’s office by the Yonkers Inspector General’s office. Walker is scheduled to be sentenced on September 29, 2008. He faces a maximum of seven years in state prison. Assistant District Attorney Michael Hughes, Chief of the Public Integrity Bureau, prosecuted the case.
