SENTENCED FOR stealing overdue fines

Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Margo Reed (DOB 01/21/58) of 73-83 Highland Avenue, Yonkers, New York, was sentenced today to shock probation – six months in the County Jail and the remainder on probation for her February 16^th 2012 guilty plea to:

· one count of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, a class “C” Felony,

· one count of False Returns, a class “E” Felony, under New York State Tax Law.

Over a seven year period from July 7th, 2004 to December 7th, 2010, the defendant, an employee of the Yonkers Public Library Business Office, was responsible for collecting overdue fines and other revenue from the three branches that comprise the Yonkers Public Library System.

On a weekly basis, the defendant would alter the collection paperwork to falsely reflect a lower amount of fees collected and pocket the difference.

She was also responsible for reconciling the money and submitting that revenue to the City of Yonkers Finance Department for deposit.

The larceny occurred at One Larkin Center in Yonkers, where the defendant stole approximately $163,582.00.

Additionally, the defendant did not account for the money on her New York State tax returns resulting in understating her income.

As part of the sentence, $10,000 in restitution was to be paid at sentencing, an additional $10,400 will be paid through probation and a restitution judgment and order in the amount of $143,182.00 was imposed by the Court.

Assistant District Attorney Shara Abraham of the Investigations Division prosecuted the case.
