Nov. 30, 2017 -- Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino, Jr. today announced the sentencing of a Yonkers man to 17 years to life in state prison for murdering his neighbor with a baseball bat in 2016.
Karmel Mills, 42-years-old, was sentenced today by Judge Barry Warhit after pleading guilty in May to:
- one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a class “A” Felony,
- one count of Burglary in the First Degree, a class "B" Violent Felony,
- one count of Strangulation in the First Degree-Obstruction of Breathing/Blood Circulation-Causing Serious Physical Injury, a class "C" Violent Felony
On Jan. 19, 2016, members of the Yonkers Police Department responded to a 911 call at
52 Ravine Ave. in Yonkers where victim David Pinnock lived. Upon arrival, they found the door to the Pinnock’s apartment had been broken off the hinges with Mills choking him inside. The police ordered Mills off of Pinnock and he complied. Mills, who was bleeding from the head, was placed under arrest and transported to a local hospital.
Pinnock had no pulse and police performed CPR. Arriving EMT’s were able to resuscitate him and he was transported to Westchester Medical Center where he was placed into a medically-induced coma and attached to a ventilator.
Pinnock suffered blunt force trauma, and kidney and lung failure, as well as brain damage. He was removed from the ventilator on Feb. 6, 2016 and pronounced dead.
Mills and Pinnock were neighbors in the same apartment building and had an ongoing dispute.
Assistant District Attorney Lana Hochheiser, Deputy Bureau Chief of the Superior Court Trial Division’s Homicide Bureau, prosecuted the case.
