June 17, 2013 -- Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Tyron McCallum (DOB 04/08/87) of 603 S. 6th Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York pled guilty today to the entire indictment charging him with:

  • one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class "B" Violent Felony,
  • one count of Assault in the First Degree, a class "B" Violent Felony,
  • two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, in the Second Degree, a class "C" Felony.

Travis Clarke (DOB 09/09/89) of 130 W. 4th Street, Mount Vernon, New York previously pled guilty to:

  • one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class "B" Violent Felony,

and was sentenced on June 11, 2013 to ten years in prison.

Kristopher Benjamin (DOB 08/31/88) of 34 S. 3rd Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York case is pending.

McCallum is a member of the GMG gang who operate in the area of 13th Avenue in the City of Mount Vernon, New York

On July 25, 2012, at approximately 9:03pm, the defendants, acting in concert, fired ten shots from a semi-automatic pistol at a vehicle traveling on East Sidney Avenue near the intersection of North Columbus Avenue in the City of Mount Vernon in an attempt to kill the occupants, who were members of a rival street gang.

One bullet struck an unrelated vehicle traveling on East Sidney Avenue, penetrating the car and seriously injuring a 65 year old female passenger.

Following a two-month long investigation by Mount Vernon police and investigators from the Westchester County District Attorneys office, the defendants were identified and arrested.

"The residents of the City of Mount Vernon should not feel that by leaving their homes they are in constant fear as their community is held hostage by handgun violence. As evidenced by the close cooperative effort between the Mount Vernon Police Department and the investigators from my office, we were able to expeditiously apprehend these individuals. We are committed to reducing violent crime in Mount Vernon and are aggressively targeting the lethal combination of gangs and guns, which is essential in making a safe community a reality for everyone in the City of Mount Vernon," said District Attorney Janet DiFiore.

Sentencing for McCallum will be on Aug. 14, 2013.

He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison.

These prosecutions are part of a continuing effort by local and federal law enforcement working together to address the continuing gang violence in the City of Mount Vernon.
