July 28, 2016 -- Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty announced today that Carlton Brown (DOB 12/18/83) of 2935 Holland Avenue, Bronx, New York, was sentenced to twelve years in state prison after previously pleading guilty to:

  • one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree, a class “B” Felony,

relating to the death of his girlfriend’s two-and-one-half-year-old toddler, Kali Mack.

On Aug. 31, 2014 at 9:32 p.m., the defendant telephoned 911 indicating a child was in distress. Emergency Services arrived and the defendant told firefighters that she fell off the bed.

She was removed to Montifiore Mount Vernon Hospital.

On Sept. 1, 2014 at 1:04 a.m., the toddler was transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Montifiore in the Bronx and admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Medical personnel from both hospitals called in reports to the State Central Registry. The District Attorney’s Office was notified and the Mount Vernon Police Department assigned detectives to investigate.

On Sept. 3, 2014, the victim was pronounced dead.

On Sept. 4, 2014, an autopsy was performed by the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office. The determination was that the cause of death was abusive head trauma and the manner of death was homicide.

In court, the defendant admitted to subjecting Kali Mack to blunt force trauma about her head and forcibly shaking her body thereby causing her to sustain abusive head trauma, retinal hemorrhages and causing her death.

Defendant was remanded to the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections.

Assistant District Attorney Doreen Lloyd, Chief of the Child Abuse Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Mary Clark DiRusso prosecuted the case.
