Jan. 14, 2013 -- Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that William Watkins-Gomes (DOB 11/17/86) of 175 Yonkers Avenue, Yonkers, New York was arraigned today on a nine-count indictment charging him with:
- three counts of Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree, class “D” Felonies,
- two counts of Driving While Intoxicated class “A” Misdemeanors,
- one count of Driving While Intoxicated/Driving While Ability Impaired, a class “A” Misdemeanor,
- one count of Reckless Driving, an unclassified Misdemeanor under the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law,
- two Violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law: Driving on Roadways Laned for Traffic, Driving on Right Side of Roadway.
On Aug. 4, 2013, at approximately 4:47 a.m., a 2005 Honda Civic being operated by the defendant was westbound on West Sandford Boulevard. While on the east side of South 5th Avenue, the car jumped the south side curb, drove on the sidewalk and sideswiped a building. The car continued traveling westbound, crossed South 5th Avenue, and struck a tree on the south side sidewalk on the west side of South 5th Avenue.
The victim, the defendant’s girlfriend, was in the front passenger seat. She was removed to Mount Vernon Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The defendant was pinned in the vehicle and after being extricated, was brought to Jacobi Medical Center.
Blood was obtained by the Mount Vernon Police Department pursuant to a Search Warrant.
The defendant’s B.A.C. was a .10 and THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, was also present.
He was placed under arrest at the hospital.
Bail was continued at $100,000.
His next court date is Feb. 28, 2014.
He faces a maximum sentence of seven years in state prison.
Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Strongin of the Superior Court Trial Division is prosecuting the case.
