Aug. 6, 2014 -- Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced that Sheldene Campbell (DOB 8/24/71) of 16 Ormian Dr., Pomona, New York, was sentenced today to twenty years to life for Murder in the Second Degree and fifteen years in prison for Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, to be served consecutively, for a total of thirty five years to life on her December 2011 conviction after a jury to:
- one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a class "A" Felony,
- one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class "A" Felony,
- one count of Attempted Assault in the First Degree, a class "C" Felony,
- one count of Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting, a class "D" Felony,
- one count of Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting, a class "A" Misdemeanor,
for the October 2008 death of Marie Bucci and injury to Roseanne Schiavone.
The defendant was sentenced, at bedside, in the Infirmary at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility.
On Dec. 19, 2011 the defendant had been found to be not competent for sentencing on her conviction resulting from a New York State Criminal Procedure Law 730.30 mental competency examination.
The defendant had been bedridden and on a feeding tube and trach collar, and numerous and extensive bedside hearings had been conducted by the court with all parties present that included testimony from two neurologists, three psychologists, hospital nursing staff and correctional personnel.
On June 26, 2014, the defendant, who had been committed to the custody of the New York State Office of Mental Health for confinement, after a bedside conference and court held examination, with all parties present, was found to be competent for today's sentencing.
On Oct. 19, 2008, at approximately 11 a.m., Roseanne Schiavone was walking her dog in the vicinity of 205 Havilands Dr. in White Plains, when, behind her, she heard the revving of a car engine.
As she tried to get out of the way of the oncoming car, she was struck by the vehicle.
The vehicle, which should have been traveling on the right side of the road was not, striking Mrs. Schiavone on the left side of the road.
The dog, which she was walking, also was injured suffering a broken hind leg.
The vehicle continued up Havilands Drive at a high rate of speed.
At the intersection of Baylor Circle and Havilands Drive, Marie Bucci, who was out for a walk, was struck.
Witnesses called 911 - responding EMS technicians transported Mrs. Bucci to White Plains Hospital where she was declared dead at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The defendant continued to drive at a high rate of speed up Havilands Drive exiting at North Street.
Shortly thereafter, White Plains police located the defendant walking in the area of Bryant and South Lexington Avenues.
Her vehicle, with obvious damage, was parked nearby.
After preliminary questioning, she was taken to headquarters and was placed under arrest.
Assistant District Attorneys Christine O'Connor and Kerrie Williams of the Superior Court Trial Division prosecuted the case.
